HISTORY OF VISUAL ARTS ASSOCIATION In 1995 Sumter County officials agreed to a proposal from a group of 12 artists to provide free gallery space in the Annex in return for an opportunity to have fine art on their walls. Thus the Visual Arts Association was born. As the group expanded it needed more structure and in 1997 Bylaws were approved, officers elected and an Executive Board formed. In 2003 the present bylaws were approved to replace the original bylaws. Through the years the number of venues and learning opportunities has greatly increased, and the membership has grown to over 220 members. In 2004 a scholarship committee was formed with the task of providing scholarships to local high school graduates who are entering the field of visual art. The Articles of Incorporation were written, approved and filed with the state of Florida on 12/27/04. In 2006 the fund had grown large enough to award the first scholarships and 2008 will be the third year that scholarships are provided to local artists. The VAA provides many opportunities for members to learn from experienced artists and from each other, and to exhibit their art for judging and critique.
